Product history: The SCR-536, nicknamed the “handie-talkie,” was a portable radio transceiver developed by the Motorola for the United States Army during World War II. Introduced in 1941, it was one of the first practical handheld radios used in combat. Operating on AM frequencies, it allowed short-range voice communication between infantry units, greatly improving coordination on the battlefield. Though limited in range and battery life, its portability was revolutionary. The SCR-536 saw extensive service in Europe and the Pacific, becoming a vital tool for frontline troops and influencing future military radio design.
