Product history: World War II U.S. oil drums were steel containers used to store and transport fuel, lubricants, and industrial oils for the United States Army and Allied forces worldwide. Typically holding 55 gallons, they were made from rolled steel with reinforced ribs for strength and ease of handling. Removable or sealed bung caps allowed controlled pouring and pumping. Bold stencilling identified contents, hazards, and ownership. Designed for mass production and global shipment, these drums supported mechanized warfare by ensuring a steady supply of fuel and lubricants to vehicles, aircraft, and equipment across every theatre of operations.
