Product history: The Thompson M1A1 was a simplified wartime version of the famous Thompson submachine gun, developed during World War II for mass production. Adopted by U.S. forces in 1942, it replaced earlier, more expensive models such as the M1928A1. The M1A1 used a straight blowback action, fixed firing pin, side-mounted cocking handle, and accepted box magazines only, not drums. Chambered in .45 ACP, it was valued for close-range firepower but was heavy and costly compared with later designs. Used by American, British, and Allied troops, it became an iconic weapon of infantry, paratroopers, and armoured crews during the war.
