Product history: Field Marshal Bernard “Monty” Montgomery was one of Britain’s best-known commanders of World War II. He became famous in North Africa after taking command of the Eighth Army in 1942. Montgomery restored morale, built up supplies, and defeated Erwin Rommel’s Axis forces at the Second Battle of El Alamein. This victory helped turn the tide of the desert war. He later commanded Allied ground forces in Sicily, Italy, Normandy, and northwest Europe. Known for careful planning, confidence, and a distinctive public image, Montgomery was admired by many soldiers but sometimes criticized for caution and ego.
