Product history: The M8 Scott was an American self-propelled howitzer used during the Second World War. Based on the M5 Stuart light tank chassis, it carried a short 75 mm howitzer in an open-topped turret. Entering service in 1942, it gave cavalry, reconnaissance, and armoured units mobile fire support against infantry, strongpoints, and light fortifications. The M8 was fast and useful, but lightly armoured and not intended to fight tanks. It served with US forces in Italy, northwest Europe, and the Pacific, as well as some Allied armies. Compact and reliable, the M8 provided valuable close-support fire for advancing troops.
