Product history: British Mills bombs, Bakelite grenades, white phosphorus grenades, and Gammon bombs were key British hand grenades of World War II. The Mills bomb, especially the No. 36M, was the standard British fragmentation grenade, used widely by British and Commonwealth forces. Bakelite-bodied grenades were made partly from early plastic materials to save metal and simplify production. White phosphorus grenades, such as the No. 77, produced smoke and incendiary effects for concealment, signalling, or attacking positions. The Gammon bomb, officially the No. 82 grenade, was a cloth-bodied explosive charge used mainly by airborne and special forces against vehicles, obstacles, and strongpoints.
