Product history: The British 2-gallon “Flimsy” can was an early World War II fuel container used by the British Army, especially in North Africa. Made from thin, soldered steel with a rectangular shape, it was cheap and quick to produce but notoriously fragile. Seams split, handles tore off, and fuel often leaked or evaporated in desert heat. Losses were so severe that some units reported more fuel lost to cans than enemy action. The Flimsy’s failures directly influenced the adoption of sturdier German-style designs, leading to the superior jerrycan.
