Product history: The Browning Automatic Rifle, or BAR, was a U.S. light automatic weapon used widely in World War II. Originally designed by John Browning in 1917, it was updated as the M1918A2 before the war. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, it gave infantry squads portable automatic fire, though its 20-round magazine limited sustained use. The BAR was heavy but reliable, powerful, and respected by soldiers. American forces used it in Europe and the Pacific, often as a squad support weapon. Though not a true light machine gun, it provided valuable suppressive fire until gradually replaced after the war.
